PASADENA, Calif. (Sep. 29, 2021) – Caltech men's soccer faced a ruthless Occidental College squad on Wednesday but refused to yield, notching a second half goal to deny the visitors a shutout with the final margin of one determined by a late first half penalty kick.
Facing a 2-0 halftime deficit, senior Velissarios Christodolou (Athens, Greece / Athens College) found the back of the net on a shot to the low left post in the 67th minute after battling the Oxy backline throughout the game. Fellow senior Rohan Mirchandani (Pleasanton, Calif. / Football) earned the assist on the well-timed give-and-go play on a quick counterattack up the wing.
Despite the low final score, the Tigers outshot the Beavers 21-2, with sophomore goalkeeper Derek Ing (Hong Kong / Hong Kong International School) making eight saves in the match. Occidental also committed an extremely high 21 fouls to Caltech's 10 in the chippy affair, with each team receiving two yellow cards apiece.
Head Coach Duncan Gillis and the Beavers will hit the road for a Saturday night tilt against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
