PASADENA, Calif. (March 10, 2022) – The No. 22 Caltech Men's Tennis team played a competitive match that led to a 6-3 victory over the No. 38 Swarthmore College Garnet on Thursday morning at home.
Opening with a close doubles round, sophomore duo Kyle McCandless(Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Daniel Wen(McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology) bested their opponents at court one with an 8-5 win. In the second position, sophomore Ishaan Kannan(Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) and senior Jake Will(Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) played an impressive match, but despite their best efforts the duo fell to the Garnet in a 7-8 loss. At court three, junior Rishi Gundakaram(Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and John Kim(Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) notched an 8-6 win over their opponents, giving the Beavers the lead as they headed into singles.
Singles action started off with a 3-6, 3-6 loss by Kannan in the first position. Nevertheless, McCandless picked up his teammate and helped regain the lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win at court two. In the third position, Will showed resilience and skill as he clinched a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 win after a tiebreaker was forced. At court four, senior Matthew Gonzalgo(Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory, while Wen defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 in a tiebreaker set. In the sixth position, freshman Victor Li(West Chester, Pa. / Unionville) forced the third tiebreaker set of the day but ultimately fell to his opponent 6-7, 6-2, 3-10. The Beavers concluded their match with a 6-3 victory over 38th-ranked Swarthmore.
