Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 20, 2022) – In a convincing display on a balmy Sunday morning, the No. 22 Caltech Men's Tennis team defeated Whitman College 8-1 to pick up their fourth match victory out of five this month.
The day began with all three Beavers doubles pairs knocking off the Blues duos, with sophomores Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology) securing a convincing 8-3 on court one. Sneaking out a tiebreaker win were senior Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) and Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann), turning up the heat for a 7-2 tiebreak score and an 8-7 victory in the second pairing. And in the third doubles matchup, juniors Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) picked up a close but comfortable 8-5 win, giving Caltech a 3-0 match advantage heading into the singles session.
Three Beavers took the momentum from their doubles victories and picked up their second wins of the day against their singles opponents from the Blues. McCandless played in the top singles matchup and crushed the competition 6-2, 6-1. Wen cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 to notch another point for Caltech on court four, and Gundakaram played a near-perfect 6-1, 6-0 match on court five.
The remaining singles wins came from senior Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas), who rebounded from a 3-6 first set with 6-3 and 10-6 scores in singles three, and Nathan Zou () recovered from a second set loss to win the sixth singles match by a 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 score.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers finish out their busy month of March with four matches next week, beginning on Mar. 22 against Gustavus Adolphus College.
