PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 25, 2021) – In the first match of a home double header, the No. 18 Caltech men's tennis team was defeated 4-5 by the No. 33 Colby College Mules.
Starting off in doubles, sophomore duo Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology) seamlessly defeated their opponents 8-4 at court one. Sophomore Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) and senior Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) were also victorious at second doubles with an 8-7(6) win over the Mules. Unfortunately, the Beavers were unable to pull off a sweep in doubles after junior duo Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) was defeated 7-8(3) in a back-and-forth match on court three.
The Beaves were up 2-1 heading into the singles portion of the match. In first singles, Kannan triumphed over his opponent with a 6-3, 6-3 win at first singles, but McCandless was bested at second singles with a 3-6, 4-6 defeat. At third singles, Will battled back against his opponent after losing the first set. The senior forced a third set but ultimately lost a well-fought match 3-6, 6-3, 2-6. While senior Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) lost 5-7, 3-6 at fifth singles, Gundakaram would secure a 6-2, 6-3 victory over his opponent at court six. Despite their best efforts, the Beavers lost 4-5 in the highly competitive match.
