Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 25, 2022) - In their second match of a Saturday doubleheader, the No. 18 Caltech men's tennis team was victorious over the No. 16 George Fox Bruins with a final match score of 5-4.
In the doubles portion of the match, sophomore Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) and senior Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahao School) fell to the Bruins 5-8 at court 1. Nonetheless, junior duo Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) picked up their teammates, winning 8-4 at court two. Sophomore Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) paired up with Aditya Srinivasan (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford Sutherland) to triumph over their opponents and solidify two out of three wins at doubles for the Beavers.
Heading into singles, the Beavers had a 2-1 lead over the Bruins that would be critical in securing tonight's win. At first and second singles, Kannan and McCandless unfortunately fell to their opponents 3-6, 1-6 and 4-6, 0-6 respectively. At third singles, Will started off strong with a 6-3 win in set one, but his opponent battled back and caused the senior to lose the match 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. At fourth singles, senior Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) defeated his opponent with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while at sixth singles junior Nathan Zou (Murfreesboro, Tenn. / Central Magnet) dominated the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Closing out the match at fifth singles was Gundakaram who forced a third set and clinched a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win that led the Beavers to victory.
