Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 30, 2022) – Caltech Women's Water Polo faced the nationally third-ranked Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a Wednesday night matchup and their first of two road games this week.
About midway through the first quarter, sophomore Riya Shrivastava (Saratoga, Calif. / Lynbrook) drew an exclusion against her CMS defender, after which Head Coach Jon Bonafede quickly called for a timeout. As play resumed, the Beavers calmly and clinically passed the ball around the perimeter before sophomore Tyler Fox (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) fired from distance and beat the goalie, with junior Amanda Piyapanee (Southlake, Texas / Greenwich) earning the assist on the powerplay goal.
Then in the second quarter, sophomore Emma Gurcan (Portland, Ore. / Lincoln) drew a common foul seven meters away from the Athenas' net, and then surprised the defensive unit with a quick shot from long range for the Beavers' second goal.
Caltech converted on another advantage in the fourth quarter as freshman Sophia Slora (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) drew another CMS exclusion. The Beavers moved the ball around with a few clean passes, with Fox finally dishing it to Shrivastava for a sharp-angle shot from the left of the cage, beating the goalie for Caltech's third goal just after the Athenas exclusion expired. Fox picked up the last goal of the contest on a buzzer beater for her second goal of the game, Caltech's fourth.
Senior goalie Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) saved nine shots on goal in her full-game effort, and the Beavers' unyielding defense played a part in the relentless Athenas missing the cage on another nine shot attempts.
The Beavers will play on the road again this Saturday morning in an 11 a.m. game against nationally fourth-ranked Whittier College.
