Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. (Apr. 1, 2022) - The No. 18 Caltech men's tennis team started SCIAC play on the road in Claremont yesterday, facing No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripts. Despite the Beavers excellent start to the season in nonconference matches, they were unable to pull off a win and fell 0-9 against the Stags.
In doubles competition, the sophomore duo Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology), who are ranked sixth in the West, were defeated 4-8 at court one. At second doubles, sophomore Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) and senior Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) lost 3-8 against opponents. While Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) battled against their opponents on court 3, the junior duo would fall 6-8 at third doubles.
In singles competition, Kannan, who is ranked 17th in the West, fell 1-6, 3-6 at court one against the tenth-ranked player in the West, Philip Martin. At second singles, McCandless, ranked 18th in the West, was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Jack Katzman, the fourteenth-ranked player in the West. On court three, Will battled No. 22 in the West Matthew Robinson but ultimately lost the match 6-4, 6-2. At court four, senior Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) fell 6-1, 6-2, while Wen lost his singles match 6-2, 6-2 at court five. Finishing out the day, Gundakaram fell to his opponent 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
