Box Score ORANGE, Calif. (Apr. 13, 2022) – Caltech Women's Water Polo played their final away game of the 2022 regular season in a Wednesday night matchup against SCIAC foe Chapman University, and opened with one of their best performances of the season.
After trading shots with the host Panthers and allowing a powerplay goal that put Chapman on the board first, the Beavers responded 29 seconds later as sophomore Tyler Fox (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) buried an unassisted goal to level the score at 1-1.
Chapman came back with another goal, followed by their third tally on another extra attacker situation and pulling ahead 3-1. Caltech kept the intensity high and drew an exclusion on their next possession, and Fox capitalzed on the advantage for her second goal of the contest to make it a one-goal game again. The two teams traded shots again, and then with just over a minute left in the period, sophomore Emma Gurcan (Portland, Ore. / Lincoln) fired and scored to tie the game at 3-3.
Senior goalkeeper Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) frustrated the Chapman offense with a total of nine saves, as did freshmen Lana Lubecke (Honolulu, Hawaii / Kalani) and Amanda Piyapanee (Southlake, Texas / Carroll), who each picked up a steal in the contest.
Caltech scored once more in the third quarter, once again coming from Gurcan's hand to mark both her 34th goal and ninth multi-goal game of the season.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will wrap up the 2022 campaign on Saturday's Orange Out Day against the Cal Lutheran Regals. The game is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
