Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. (Apr. 30, 2022) – Caltech Men's Tennis wrapped up their regular season Saturday morning on the road against the Whittier College Poets, reinforcing their rankings of No. 15 nationally and fourth in the ITA West Region with a resounding 8-1 victory.

The Beavers opened the day by sweeping the doubles session, as juniors Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney), and John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) doubled up Whittier's second doubles team with an 8-4 win.

Third doubles saw sophomores Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology) and Andrei Staicu (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope) pair up for the first time this season, battling their way to an 8-6 win.

Finally, the top pairing of sophomore Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) and Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) fought their way to a tiebreaker but prevailed by a score of 8-7 (2).

Caltech kept the momentum alive through singles play, with regional No. 17 Kannan defeating No. 23 Spencer Cinco in the first position, 6-4, 7-5. Will outlasted a second-set surge by his Poet foe in second singles, notching another point for the Beavers with a 6-2, 7-5 score.

Wen moved up to the third position for the first time all season and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win for his team-high 12th singles win of the season.

Gundakaram claimed his 11th singles win and cemented a 4-0 fifth singles record, bouncing back from the second set to earn a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory. Finally, Kim bounced back after conceding the first set to his Whittier opponent, rallying to win by a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 tally.

The win lifted Caltech's SCIAC record to 5-2, earning sole possession of third place in the conference and setting set a new program record as their 14th win of the regular season.

Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers are now bound for the SCIAC Championships semifinals, taking on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens this Friday. Find more information as it becomes available at www.GoCaltech.com.
