Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 8, 2022) – Caltech Men's Tennis hosted the University of Redlands on a scorching hot Friday afternoon, soundly defeating the visiting Bulldogs 7-2 and improving to 2-1 in SCIAC play. The victory came mere hours after the new national rankings were announced and Caltech earned the 15th spot, the highest ranking in program history.
The Beavers jumped out to an early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) and sophomore Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) paired up to edge the Bulldogs' second doubles team with a 7-4 tiebreak score earning the 8-7 win. In third doubles, juniors Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) powered through for an 8-5 win to send the Beavers into singles ahead by one.
Kanaan took command of first singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory to claim his second point of the day, as did Gundakaram in sixth singles with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win. Senior Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) came out on top of third singles with a dramatic 7-5, 6-7, 10-7 score, and Will turned up the heat in his second set to win 7-6, 6-3 on court four to complete his 2-0 day. And on court five, sophomore Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology) bounced back after his first set to claim a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.
