No. 15 Men's Tennis Hot Streak Continues in Win vs. No. 36 Cal Lutheran

Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Apr. 9, 2022) – Caltech Men's Tennis extended their winning streak to four matches in a row with a Saturday morning win against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, further asserting their position as the 15th-ranked program in all of NCAA Division III, a program record.

The regionally 8th-ranked duo of sophomores Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology) outpaced their Court One doubles opponents and earned an 8-2 win. While that would be the only point the Beavers would pick up in the doubles session, Caltech powered through the singles session with determination and resilience, winning in five of their six pairings.

Senior Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) finished first, making quick work of his rival in a 6-2, 6-0 win on Court Four. In the sixth position, junior Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) followed closely with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to give Caltech the lead in the match. Wen then held off his Kingsman opponent in fifth singles by a 7-6, 6-4 score, picking up his second point of the contest and bringing Caltech within one point of cliching the match.

Finally, senior Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) clinched the team victory on Court Three, rebounding after a close second set loss to win 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Sophomore Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) was the last to finish, and he did so in dramatic fashion. After dropping his first set 1-6 in the top singles spot, he bounced back with a 7-6 win to force a third set. After falling behind 5-2, he saved two match points to fight all the way back for another 7-6 score for the win.

Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers are now in third place in the SCIAC standings, and will host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Apr. 15.
