CLAREMONT, Calif. (Apr. 9, 2022) – The Caltech track and field team competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite this past weekend, facing athletes from SCIAC teams, as well as other colleges and private track clubs from across the nation. During their impressive outing, the Beavers broke two school records and eight personal records (PR).
Women's
A total of six women's track and field members competed on behalf of Caltech in Claremont. In the 100m Dash, freshman Isabela Ceniceros (Mukilteo, Wash. / Kamiak) recorded a 13.96 finish, placing 1st in her heat and 29th overall. Later in the 800m Run, graduate student Margaret Trautner (Houston, Texas / MIT) placed third overall with a 2:11.51 finish, outrunning her previous PR of 2:12.03 recorded in May 2019 while a junior at MIT. Moreover, the graduate student broke Caltech's previous record of 2:22.21, set by Michelle Marasign in 2019. Trautner continued to reach new heights in the 1500m event where she placed 4th overall at 4:33.40, breaking another Caltech record which she set just last weekend at 4:36.89 during SCIAC Multi Dual 2.
The women's field events also saw new personal records for the Beavers. Freshman Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) placed 14th in the women's pole vault event and recorded a new PR of 2.30m. Elam is currently tied for 9th on Caltech's leaderboard with Paula Whitten's vault from the 2001 season. In women's shot put, sophomore Meg Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall School) led the Beavers with her 10.37m throw, placing 10th overall and securing the fourth-ranked slot on Caltech's leaderboard. Freshman Rucheng Pan (Brookfield, Wisc. / Brookfield East) placed 22nd in the event with an 8.39m throw, while her classmate Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House School) placed 26th with a 7.25m throw.
In women's discus, Robertson placed 10th with a 33.26m throw that ranks 7th on the Caltech leaderboard. Hu placed 20th in the event with a 27.18m throw, breaking her previous PR of 25.10m recorded at SCIAC Multi Dual 2. Additionally, Pan placed 25th overall with a 22.23m throw. Finishing out the field events with hammer throw, Robertson placed 7th overall with a 43.90m throw, breaking her previous PR of 37.50m from SCIAC Multi Dual 1. The sophomore now holds the second-ranked throw on Caltech's leaderboard and is less than .40m away from breaking the school record. Pan also competed in the event and placed 24th with her 22.52m throw.
A total of eight Beavers represented the men's track and field team this past weekend in Claremont. Starting off the day with a distance event, freshman Pablo Backer Peral (Pasadena, Calif. / La Cañada) finished the 1500m Run in 4:54.15, while freshman Emile Anand (Dubai, U.A.E. / Cambridge International School) followed close behind at 5:00.00. Later, freshmen Roy Jiang (Vancouver, B.C. / Southridge School) and Malik Paulino (Little Elm, Texas / Little Elm) competed for the Beavers in the 100m Dash. With a time of 11.55, Jiang placed 4th in his heat and 30th overall, breaking his previous PR of 11.59 set at Rossi Relays. Paulino ran a strong 12.08 dash and placed 43rd in the event.
In the 400m Dash, senior Jerome Seebeck (Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton College Prep) placed 2nd in his heat and 23rd overall with a new PR of 52.40, outrunning his previous best of 52.70 set at the Westmont Collegiate Classic. Freshman Cason Shepard (Vancouver, Wash. / Union) also participated in the 400m Dash, placing 4th in the same heat as Seebeck and 25th overall. The freshman set a new PR, also besting his previous record of 53.04 from the Westmont Collegiate Classic.
Competing in the men's field events was freshman throwing duo Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wisc. / James Madison Memorial) and Lucas Lanzendorf (Leominster, Mass. / Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science). In Shot Put, Amelinez-Robles placed 8th overall with an 11.75m throw, while Lanzendorf placed 19th with his 10.02m throw. Later in discus, Amelinez-Robles took 3rd place with an impressive 38.52m throw, and Lanzendorf set a new PR with his 27.55m throw. Finishing out the field events with hammer throw, Amelinez-Robles placed 8th with a 29.16m throw, while Lanzendorf took 11th place with a 17.56m throw.
