PASADENA, Calif. (May 5, 2022) - The 14-6, (5-2 SCIAC) men's tennis team, led by Head Coach Jason Cohen, is a school-best 15th nationally ranked program and ranked fourth in the West Region. Caltech enters the postseason having won 6 of their last 7 matches.
The only defeat in that stretch was a 7-2 loss to Pomona-Pitzer on April 15. Five of the six singles matches went to three sets that day with Caltech losing four of five of those three-setters. Clearly, the match was much closer than the 7-2 score line suggests.
This matchup in the semifinal round of the second and third seeded teams in the SCIAC, will take place at the Pauley Tennis Complex on the Pomona College campus in Claremont on Friday, May 6 starting at 4:00 pm.
Led by sophomores
Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, NY / Horace Mann), a First Team All SCIAC selection, as well as sophomore
Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. /Lexington), a Second Team All SCIAC selection along with senior
Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) who was also named to the All-SCIAC second team.
While not making it onto either the first or second team, it's important to mention the contributions of
Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney), as well as to acknowledge the only other senior other than
Jake Will on the roster
. Senior
Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Florida / Saint Thomas Aquinas) is in his last year with the Beavers.
The winner of Friday's semifinal, will take on the winner of the other semifinal between first seed Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges Stags and the Tigers of Occidental College. The Championship match will take place at the higher seed's home court on Saturday, May 7.
