Beavers Draw With Beacons To Wrap Up Road Trip

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. (Sept. 10, 2022) - Having successfully begun their road trip to Boston at Wentworth on Friday evening, the Caltech women's soccer program had the opportunity to make it a perfect road trip with a victory over UMass Boston on Saturday morning. Beginning at 7 AM PDT, the early morning tilt provided the Beavers with a good test of their resilience and fitness levels.

While the Beavers and Beacons each shared possession throughout the first half, it was the home team that had more scoring opportunities early on. Fortunately, senior goalkeeper Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Academy) was up to the task in defense once again, holding firm in keeping the Beacons off of the score sheet. Fine, and the Beavers' defense, faced eight shots in the first half, with Fine making two saves. The Beavers were out shot in the first 45 minutes, 8 to 4 and were also facing UMass Boston's senior goalkeeper who was making her season debut.

In the second half the Beavers had a little more possession, run of play, and controlled the shots on goal category. Both teams had ten shots in total for the afternoon, with five of the Beavers strikes being on goal while only two were saved by the Beavers keepers.

Offensively, the best scoring chances came through the efforts of sophomore forward Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. /Palo Alto) The best scoring chance for the Beavers came midway through the second frame when Solgaard struck a hard driven left footed shot that hammered off of the crossbar and bounced away after it looked as though Caltech would collect it and get another shot on the open goal. Solgaard again had several other shots but was denied by breaking the scoreless tie and matching her late game heroics from Friday night. This matchup ended as it started, 0-0.

Head coach Jen Clark's troops had a very positive overall road trip, going 1-0-1. In addition to the game experience, the camaraderie and team bonding elements will likely pay dividends as the program continues to move forward.

Next up for the Beavers is the beginning of SCIAC play. Caltech opens on the road at California Lutheran University where the Beavers will be hosted by the Regals inside William Bollen Stadium on the Cal Lu campus in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 PM.
