Fighting Spirit Alive For Men's Soccer

Box Score
PASADENA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2022) - Caltech's men's soccer team has been tasked with beginning the 2022 SCIAC campaign at two of the top returning sides in conference from 2021.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs from the University of Redlands came to campus and while playing a tight and spirited first half that saw Redlands lead 1-0, the Beavers fell to (1-3-0, 0-2-0 SCIAC).

"I was very pleased with the fight and competitiveness we demonstrated, especially in the first half," Head Coach Duncan Gillis said. "Our first years continue to gain valuable experience and are playing at a very high level. We continue to look for improvement and are making progress that will translate to positive results."

The Beavers defense was tested throughout the game, and goalkeeper Derek Ing (Hong Kong, Hong Kong International School) faced a total of 16 shots, making numerous quality saves. The goal allowed by the Beavers in the first half was a well taken shot by the Bulldogs forward from outside the area that barely escaped Ing's reach as it found the upper right corner putting Caltech down a goal in the 24th minute of the opening half.

While the two sides seemed destined to battle it out in a close one goal game as the second half got underway, with the Beavers looking for the equalizer, it was the Bulldogs that seized the run of play and maintained relentless pressure as they built on their lead, eventually defeating the Beavers by the final score of 0-5. While the match seemed much closer than the final scoreboard showed, the Beavers will continue to work as they raise their level of play in a very talented conference.

Next up for the program is an 11:00 AM match on Saturday, September 24 when the Beavers travel to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, CA. The Sagehens come into this week's action at (1-3-0, 0-1-0 SCIAC), and play on the road at La Verne Sept. 21 before facing the Beavers on Saturday, Sept. 24.
