Cross Country Shows Resilience at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. (Sep 3, 2022) – The Caltech Cross Country team competed in the Redlands Invitational this morning, exhibiting strength, breaking old personal records, and setting the tempo for the upcoming season.  

The women's team took 3rd place in the 4.5K race with a total time of 1:33.59 and score of 95 points. Senior Maria Carilli led the Beavers in the event with her run time of 18:07.4, placing 19th place out of 69 entries. Freshman Virginia Pistilli (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) made her collegiate debut and placed 20th with an 18:07.7 finish. In the middle of the pack, junior Katy Chu (San Jose, Calif. / Saint Francis) placed 29th at 18:48.0, freshman Elisa Grillo (Cypress, Texas / Bridgeland) took 32nd at 18:58.4, and sophomore Isabella Zuniga (San Juan Capistrano, Calif. / San Juan Hills) landed in 42nd at 19:58.4. Closing out the race for the Beavers were junior Alex Burr (Chicago, Ill. / Whitney M. Young) and senior Makena Rodriguez (Fairmont, Minn. / Fairmont), who recorded times of 23:47.7 and 23:47.9, respectively. 

The men's team took 6th place out of 9 teams, with a total time of 1:47:32 and 170 points. Kyle Lethander (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood) led the Beavers in the event, placing 42nd out of 112 entries. The junior recorded a new personal record of 20:34.0, outrunning his previous PR of 22:10.8 by over two minutes. Following Lethander, senior Gaurav Phanse (Fremont, Calif. / Dublin) placed 65th with a 21:35.0 finish. Sophomore Miles Jones (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) placed 66th in the event at 21:43.0, breaking his previous PR of 22:29.2, while Adnan Contract (Watchung, N.J. / Watchung Hills Regional) finished 67th with a new PR of 21:45. Juniors Kyle Piper (Lafayette, Colo. / Centaurus) and Jordan Ostby (Brea, Calif. / Brea Olinda) finished at 21:55.0 and 24:08.0, respectively. Ostby continued to show the Beavers' resilience, breaking his previous PR of 26:48.4 by over two minutes. Freshman Steve Garcia (Van Nuys, Calif. / Magnolia Science Academy 1) made his collegiate debut at Redlands with a strong finish of 26:23.0.
