PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech baseball team faced off against the Bethesda University Flames this past weekend in a three-game non-conference series. The Beavers saw a number of strong performances throughout the 27 innings, including two home runs from senior centerfielder
Will Dembski across the first two games.
Game 1 of the series began with Bethesda striking first, but the Beavers demonstrated their offensive prowess as they went to the plate in the bottom of the third. With the Flames up 2-0, junior
Gautam Chawla began the run for Caltech, rocketing a single towards shortstop and beating the throw to first base.
A few minutes later, Dembski came to the plate, connecting on a ball that went way deep and over the fence, scoring Chawla and himself to electrify the dugout and tie the game at 2-2.
A well-placed single from sophomore rightfielder
Thorsen Kristufek later in the inning advanced sophomore shortstop
Jack Fishel to second base, which would end up making a huge imprint on the game
— a few pitching mistakes from Bethesda would score Fishel later in the inning, giving the Beavers the 3-2 lead.
Bethesda would soon re-take the lead after several big hits from the Flames in the subsequent innings, but the Beavers were not done scoring. A single to left field from Chawla with two outs in the sixth would score senior leftfielder
Jack Warren, who reached base on a double.
Ultimately, Caltech could not climb back in the later innings, and the team would take a quick break before getting right back into action with Game 2 of the doubleheader.
The Flames would again strike first, putting up four runs in the first inning, but Caltech would again answer with some bats of their own. A solo home run from Dembski put the Beavers on the board
— his fifth home run of the season and second of two deep shots on the day.
The home squad would again score in the third inning after a massive triple from sophomore second baseman
Garrett Knuf — his second of the season. A sacrifice shot from first-year first baseman
Mark Hu would then score Knuf to give the squad their second run.
On the mound, junior pitcher and designated hitter
Leo Jenkins put in a solid two frames to end the game, giving up no hits and no earned runs in eight batters faced.
The teams would return for their final clash Sunday at noon. Bethesda crossed the plate two times in the first inning, but the Beavers again responded in their first chance at the dish. With Dembski on second after stealing the base, Warren would connect on a single, ultimately scoring Dembski and putting the Beavers within a run of the Flames. A ground-rule double from Kristufek down the left field line would score Warren, making the game 2-2 at the end of the first.
Chawla would reach first base on an error in the eighth inning, before moving around the bases thanks to a single from sophmore catcher
Edward Speer, a walk from Dembski, and a fielder's choice RBI from Fishel. First-year
Austin Wang, pinch running for Speer, would score as well.
Caltech will now turn their focus to the Yeomen of Oberlin College, who they will face as part of a four-game, round-robin tournament in Tucson, Ariz. The Beavers will kick off the Tucson Invitational on Sunday, Mar. 19 at 12:30 p.m.
