LOS ANGELES – In the final meet of Caltech's 2023 outdoor track & field regular season, sophomore Sophie Dalfonzo set a program record for the second time this year.
After taking silver in both the women's 10,000-meter and 5000-meter events in consecutive days at last week's SCIAC Track & Field Championships, Dalfonzo ran in the 5000-meter race at the 2023 Oxy Invitational at Occidental College and finished in 17:37.11, the fastest time in Caltech Women's Track & Field history.
Her record-breaking performance shattered her previous personal best time of 17:53.49 set just six days prior at the conference championships, and less than 24 hours after her 10K run.
Other Beavers competing in the post-championship meet included first-year pole vaulter Aaban Syed, who took sixth place out of twelve entrants in Saturday's event, clearing the bar at a height of 4.25m.
First-year Ashwitha Surabhi sprinted in the women's 100- and 200-meter dash events, finishing in 13.62 and 28.15, respectively, both times just milliseconds shy of her personal records set at last week's championships.
Sophomore Rohun Agrawal improved upon his men's 1500 meters personal record, posting a Calltech all-time top 10 finish of 4:00.12, followed by classmate Jonathan Bennett with a 4.02.06 time for his new personal best.
And finally in the men's 5000 meters, sophomore Thomas MacLean improved upon his personal best by about 31 seconds, finishing first among his teammates in 15:46.00. His two teammates running in the same event set new personal records as well, with fellow sophomore Miles Jones improving by five seconds for a 15:54.35 finish, followed by junior Ryan Chan who crossed the finish line after 16:18.59.
