TEMPE, Ariz. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the 2023 ITA Division III Academic Awards on Wednesday, naming Caltech Men's Tennis as an All-Academic Team and all 11 of its players as Scholar-Athletes.
The group earned team recognition for achieving a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
Individually, all 11 members of the team were awarded Scholar-Athlete honors for each reaching a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year. Seniors
Nathan Zou and
Rishi Gundakaram joined juniors
Ishaan Kannan,
Victor Li,
Kyle McCandless,
Andrei Staicu,
Daniel Wen, sophomore
Aditya Srinivasan and first-years
Jonathan Lin and
Andrew Zabelo on the list.
Both the team and individual awards require student-athletes to be listed on the institutional eligibility form; the team award requires all varsity letter winners to be factored into the grade-point average for the current academic year.
This past May,
four members of the team also earned 2023 Academic All-District honors by College Sports Communicators. Kannan, Li, McCandless and Wen were awarded the distinction.
The ITA awards come after the team posted an incredibly successful season on the court. Under the direction of first-year head coach
Matt Brisotti, the team achieved a
Div. III national ranking as high as No. 13 before
finishing second in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and
advancing to the finals of the 2023 SCIAC Men's Tennis Championship.
