BREA, Calif. — The Caltech country cross teams competed at the 2024 SCIAC Championship Meet on Saturday morning at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park, where the Beaver men placed third and the women collected fourth.
The third-place performance from the men ties the program's highest result in 42 years and ties their
third-place result from 2023; the group's average time of 25:55 comes in as the second-fastest in school history.
The women's fourth place showing is one of the strongest in the history of the program; the team finished just one place away from tying their all-time best SCIAC Championships performance. It is the sixth straight season in which the team nabbed fifth or better.
Four Beavers earned All-SCIAC honors across the men's and women's competitions, with junior
Rohun Agrawal (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and senior
Sophie Dalfonzo (Fair Haven, N.J. / Biotechnology & Rumson-Fair Regional) securing First Team recognition for finishing in the top-10 of their respective races while senior
Miles Jones (San Diego / Rancho Bernardo) and junior
Gigi Pistilli (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) achieved Second Team for crossing the line between 11th and 20th.
With the honor, Dalfonzo makes history as the first woman in program history to achieve All-Conference Cross Country honors all four years.
The men's race saw the Beavers score 98 points en route to their third-place finish as they beat out the University of Redlands, the University of La Verne, Chapman University, Occidental University and Cal Lutheran University.

First-year
Jack Sullivan (Bethesda, Md. / Georgetown Preparatory) ran a personal-best 26:28.2 to finish 33rd overall while senior

The women's team collected their excellent fourth-place result after scoring 118 points; the team finished ahead of Occidental by just one point in addition to beating out Chapman University, the University of La Verne and Cal Lutheran University.
The race saw the single-highest individual performance of any Beaver on the day as Dalfonzo placed eighth out of 105 finishers. The star dominated the 6,000-meter (~3.73 mile) course in 22 minutes 44.1 seconds; she averaged 6:05.8 per mile.

Hypatia Hamkins (New York / The Brearley School) stepped up to score the squad's final points in 54th (24:55.2), demolishing her previous record of 25:19.1 on a difficult course and securing a fourth-place result for the team.
First-year
Shrila Esturi (Campbell, Calif. / Saint Francis) followed soon after in 64th after crossing the line at 25:17.8.
It is the fifth straight season in which at least two Caltech women athletes achieved All-SCIAC honors; this year's group averaged 23:44 across the 6K-long course.
Head coach
Kelli Blake was proud of how her athletes in both races competed.
"We pride ourselves on getting everyone to the line healthy at the end of the season," Blake said. "Instead we had to reframe things and hope for others to take big steps up. Miles [Jones] and Stephen [Goehringer] stood out on the men's side, and Katelyn [Sadorf] and Hypatia [Hamkins] stood out on the women's side," she said.
"Both groups ran really smart and consistently moved up throughout the race."
Next up for Blake and the two squads is the NCAA West Regional Championships this Saturday, Nov. 16 in Estacada, Oregon. Action begins at 10 a.m.; find more information about the meet
