Szczuka's Comeback Win For Women's Tennis Denies No. 9 Williams Sweep

Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech's women's tennis team hosted their highest-ranked opponent yet as the Ephs of Williams College came to town Tuesday to challenge the Beavers.

The guests stormed through the doubles session for all three points, but the Beavers fought on through singles to some impressive results. Notably, sophomore Anna Szczuka (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Scotch-Plains Fanwood) rallied to win her #6 Singles matchup, bouncing back after an opening set tiebreak loss to fly through her second set with a 6-2 win, and then winning the match with an 11-9 breaker score to wrap up the day and prevent the Beavers from being blanked.

Sophomore Yoyo Benchetrit and junior Payal Patel each picked up a set win in their singles matchups, and first-year Hannah Ramsperger fell just short of forcing a third set against her rival.

"I'm excited with the fight we displayed today," Head Coach Benay Weintraub said. "no matter the score, the girls didn't back down. We found ourselves down, but everyone battled back to keep the pressure on. These competitive moments can be difficult, but this is when we learn the most about our individual and competitive spirits. If the team continues to push themselves, greatness will come their way."

Weintraub and the Beavers will be right back at it Wednesday afternoon against No. 4 Middlebury College.
