PASADENA, Calif. — Caltech Women's Tennis kicked off conference play with a massive win on Tuesday afternoon as the Beavers scooped the 7-2 victory over the Poets of Whittier College.
Caltech picked up its first team point of the day on Court 1 as senior
Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) and junior
Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) linked up in doubles play for a quick 8-3 victory.
Action then turned to singles, where the Beavers swept all six matches with the team not letting up a single set.
First-year
Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) earned a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win in a second singles match that went just over 45 minutes, giving Caltech its second team point of the day.
The Beavers soon picked up another point as Patel secured her third singles win in a row as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory on Court 3. With the result, the junior improves to a team-high six singles wins on the season; it was Patel's first-ever appearance in the third position.
First-year
Ritali Jain (San Jose, Calif. / Evergreen Valley) posted a strong performance in sixth singles as she secured the 6-0, 6-2 victory moments later.
Caltech clinched the match on Court 5 as first-year
Anna Tanaka (Honolulu / IMG Academy) picked up the 7-5, 6-3 win. After getting broken at 5-4 in the first set, the rookie climbed back to win two straight games and the set before taking over in the second set.
The Beavers added yet another point to the team score as Zhang won against Whittier's No. 1 in first singles (6-4, 6-2) to go 2-0 with Patel on the day.
All eyes then turned to the sole remaining match on Court 4, where sophomore
Anna Szczuka (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Scotch-Plains Fanwood) won 6-0 in the first set before finding herself down 0-3 in the second set. The Beaver was not dismayed, however, as she clawed back to 4-4 before topping her opponent, 7-6 (3). With the win, Szczuka improves to 5-1 on the year and is now 1-0 in the fourth spot.
