CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Caltech track & field teams took on the SCIAC Championship Meet this past weekend, with members of both the men's and women's squads earning historic marks and high finishes. Six different Beavers earned top-three performances, with one student-athlete securing an event victory and two collecting a school record.

Perhaps the most monumental performance for the Beavers came out of the men's high jump competition, where rookie Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Texas / W.B. Ray) earned first place over 18 other athletes. The rookie stunned with a personal-best mark of 1.97 meters (6 feet, 5.5 inches) in his third and final attempt at the height to claim the conference title in just his first season.

With his historic jump, Gatewood soars up the Caltech all-time top-ten list; he is now No. 3 all-time in program history for the event. The standout's previous collegiate best entering the championships was 1.90m (6' 2 ¾").

Senior Meg Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) had an exceptional weekend as she competed in three throwing events, with her best result coming in women's hammer throw as she broke her own school record. Robertson heaved a phenomenal throw of 45.34m (148'9") to earn second place, breaking her personal record by nearly three feet. Junior Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) put in a strong performance herself as she earned fifth place in the hammer with a throw of 41.72m (136' 10").

Robertson also collected vital points for the team in the women's shot put and discus competitions, where she placed fifth (10.72m, 35' 2") and sixth (36.34m, 119' 3"), respectively.

Rookie Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) also made history as she broke a 19-year school record in the women's 100-meter dash. The first-year crossed the line at 13.01 seconds to finish 16th in the prelims; she topped the previous record by .07 seconds.

The Beavers picked up another second-place finish thanks to junior Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / James Madison Memorial), who earned runner-up in the men's discus throw with a remarkable PR of 43.13m (141'6"). Amelinez-Robles picked up personal records in his other two events as well, throwing a 44.18 (144' 11") for fifth in the men's hammer throw and 13.20m (43 3 ¾") for seventh in the men's shot put.

Senior Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) finished right behind Amelinez-Robles in the discus, throwing a 41.95m (137' 7") to earn third place. Johnson also placed highly in the shot put, where he secured fourth (13.69m, 44' 11").

Sophomore Gigi Pistilli (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) put in a brilliant performance in the women's 10,000-meters, taking third place overall in her first-ever 10K. Pistilli crossed the line after 38 minutes and 0.82 seconds to put herself on the podium; the time puts her at No. 3 all-time in program history for the distance. Junior and school record-holder Sophie Dalfonzo (Fair Haven, N.J. Biotechnology & Rumson-Fair Regional) followed in fifth (38:45.20).

The men's 10K saw another third-place finish as junior Rohun Agrawal (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) ran an excellent 30:42.18 for third place overall. It was the second-fastest 10K in school history — second only to Agrawal's own school record in the distance, which he set earlier this season (30:33.34). Senior Joey Litvin (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) — who holds the program's No. 2 all-time spot in the 10K record boards — finished seventh with a time of 31:28.71.

Senior Katy Chu (Los Gatos, Calif. / Saint Francis) capped off her final conference championship meet with a massive PR and sixth-place finish in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Chu broke 12 minutes for the first time as she crossed the line at 11:58.35, just barely edging out a CMS athlete for a top-six spot. With the time, Chu moves up to No. 4 in the Caltech program record books for the event.

Junior Josh Saha (Rye, N.Y. / Hackley School) placed sixth in the men's 400-meter hurdles finals with a time of 55.43 after advancing from the prelims. Gatewood just missed out on a spot in the finals, placing 9th (57.88) while junior Cason Shepard (Vancouver, Wash. / Union HS) was tenth (59.64).

Sophomore Aaban Syed (Laurel, Md. / North County) secured seventh in the men's pole vault after clearing a height of 41.0m (13' 5 ¼").

Caltech saw a number of strong performances in the men's hammer throw behind Amelinez-Robles' fifth place performance. Junior Jadon Hale (Fort Collins, Colo., Fossil Ridge) PR'd for eighth (42.32m, 138' 10") while sophomore David Castillo (Johns Creek, Ga. / Chattahoochee) earned ninth (38.12m, 125' 1"). Rookie Colin Gray (High Point, N.C. / Early College at Guilford) PR'd for 11th (35.25m, 115' 8") while sophomore Subham Sahoo (Moon Township, India / Moon Area) placed 12th (34.89m, 114' 6"). Gray also finished 12th in men's javelin (39.93m, 131' 0").

Junior Sophie Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) PR'd by over 10 seconds in the women's 1500m, running a 4:55.11 to finish ninth in prelims before taking 11th in finals. With the speedy time, Elam moves up to sixth all-time on the program 1500m record boards. First-year Louise Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) ran a personal-best 2:25.22 in a tightly-contested women's 800m prelims; the Beaver finished 11th to just narrowly miss out on a finals spot. Both Elam and Choi-Schattle's times are the fastest of any Beaver this season.

Junior Roy Jiang (Vancouver, B.C. / Southridge School) also just missed out on a spot in the men's 400m finals after running 51.46 seconds for 11th. Similarly, rookie Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) placed 11th as she took on the 400m preliminaries; the first-year ran a personal-record time of 1:00.55. Senior Kyle Piper (Lafayette, Colo. / Centaurs) placed 12th in the men's 1500m finals after advancing from the prelims, where he finished 11th with a time of 4:02.03.

Dalfonzo added a 12th place finish in the 5K (18:38.83). The standout set the school record in the distance last season. In the men's triple jump, sophomore Sidd Shendrikar (Los Angeles / New Roads School) set a new PR (11.90m, 39' ½") to finish 12th.

Each of the four relay groups recorded season-bests; all four results were the fastest Caltech relay times this year.

The women's 4x400-meter team of Brainard, Goswami, Choi-Schattle and junior Isabela Ceniceros (Mukilteo, Wash. / Kamiak) ran a quick 4:15.51 while Jiang, Saha, Gatewood and Shepard earned a time of 3:27.08 in the men's race.

In the women's 4x100m, Brainard, Goswami, Ceniceros and sophomore Lauren Pryor (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) crossed the line at 53.04 seconds. The men's team of Jiang and rookies Miigwan Tanner-Wostrel (Cloquet, Minn. / Cloquet), Bisrat Kassahun (Merritt Island, Fla. / Edgewood Jr/Sr) and Marcel Liu (Natick, Mass. / Phillips Academy) combined for a time of 46.25.

In the team scores, the women earned sixth with 35 points while the men placed seventh with 52.
