Chu Earns Steeplechase School Record as Track & Field Tackles Franson Last Chance Meet

Full Results

AZUSA, Calif. —
A number of student-athletes from the Caltech men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Franson Last Chance Meet this past weekend, with multiple Beavers posting superb times and one student-athlete attaining a school record.

Azusa Pacific University hosted the two-day meet, which saw a significant number of high-level athletes, with competitors coming from Divisions I, II and III among others.

Perhaps the most notable result for Caltech came out of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, where senior Katy Chu (Los Gatos, Calif. / Saint Francis) made history as she earned the program record with a blazing time of 11 minutes and 41.80 seconds.

It was an exceptional race from Chu, who beat out the previous record (11:48.17) from 2019 by 6.37 seconds. The senior destroyed her previous best of 11:58.35, making it an incredible 16.55-second personal record.

Chu finished fifth among Div. III athletes and beat out several Div. I competitors.

Also of note was the performance of junior Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / James Madison), who moved up to No. 3 all-time on the Caltech record boards for the men's hammer throw. The talented Beaver posted a mark of 44.55 meters (146' 2") in his third and final attempt, topping his previous best of 44.18m (144' 11"). He was the fourth-highest Div. III finisher.

Senior Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) competed in the men's discus throw, where he finished first among Div. III athletes with a mark of 41.63m (136'7"). Amelinez-Robles followed as the second-highest Div. III finisher with a throw of 39.85m (130' 9").

Johnson also took part in the shot put competition, where he was second for Div. III with a result of 13.20m (43' 3 ¾").

Junior Rohun Agrawal (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and senior Joey Litvin (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) posted a pair of solid times in the men's 5,000-meters, with Agrawal crossing the line at 14:46.89 and Litvin finishing in 14:51.44. Litvin achieved the school record in the distance last season before Agrawal topped it this past March and then beat his own record last month.

First-year Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) took on the women's 100m dash on Friday, where she posted a lightning time of 13.15 seconds. The rookie broke the program record in the event one month ago.

Brainard returned to the track on Saturday where she competed in the 200m, clocking a quick time of 26.87 seconds. Fellow freshman Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) followed milliseconds later, at 27.18.

Earlier in the day, Goswami ran the 400m where she posted a fast time of 1:01.52.

Three Beavers took on the men's 1500m, with rookie Nathan Jay (Fremont, Calif. / John F. Kennedy) leading the squad with a personal record time of 4:11.94. First-year Ryan Fortin (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) followed moments later with a PR himself (4:12.55) while fellow rookie Richard Hoffman (Simi Valley, Calif. / Westlake) finished in 4:34.01.

Hoffman ran the 1500m on Saturday after PR'ing in the 800m on Friday with a time of 2:04.30.

Sophomore Lauren Pryor (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) ran the first open 400m of her college career, finishing the lap in 1:09.74.

Junior Thomas MacLean (Redding, Calif. / Shasta) just missed out on his PR in the men's 5K with a time of 15:39.33 while senior Ryan Chan (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) earned a personal best after crossing at 15:53.01.

Sophomore Subham Sahoo (Moon Township, India / Moon Area) threw a 32.54m (106' 9") in the men's hammer throw.

The Beavers will send several athletes to the Redlands Final Qualifier on Wednesday and Thursday in what is both teams' final scheduled non-postseason meet. Stay tuned to gocaltech.com for updates.
