CLAREMONT, Calif – Caltech Track & Field traveled the short distance to Claremont on Saturday for their third meet of the season in the Pomona-Pitzer David Salo & Nancy Crenna Invite.
Starting with the women's events, Caltech placed first in the women's 4x400-meter relay. Led by the team of Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day), Lily Randall (Astoria, Ore. / Astoria), Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga), and Lauren Pryor (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley), the Beavers finished an impressive almost six seconds before the rest of the competition, with a time of 4:15.51 seconds. The four of them also participated in the women's 200-meter race, which saw them finish 15th, 32nd, 20th, and 33rd, respectively, out of the 36-person field.
In other events, senior Sophia Dalfonzo (Fair Haven, / N.J. Biotechnology & Rumson-Fair Regional) placed third in the women's 3,000-meter race, narrowly missing out on second place by less than half a second. Dalfonzo finished with a time of 10:27.31 seconds, and although she did not win the race, she placed third out of the 42 contestants in that event.
Senior Emily Hu (Vancouver, B.C. / Crofton House) also had a strong day for the Beavers, placing third in the women's discus and the women's hammer. On the discus, Hu measured 28.40 meters (93 feet 2 inches), about two meters behind second place. Junior Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. Peak to Peak Charter) and first-year Clara Stevens also placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the women's hammer event, Caltech boasted two top-five finishers with Hu and Stevens finishing third and fourth in the event. Hu measured 38.50 meters (126 feet 4 inches) and barely missed out on second place by a tenth of a meter where Cheyanne Rodriguez of Cal Lutheran put up a distance of 38.60 meters (126 feet 4 inches). Stevens finished fourth in this event with a distance of 36.95 meters (121 feet 3 inches) but did set personal bests in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put events.
Moving over to the men's side of things, their team in the men's 4x400-meter relay placed second in the competition. Roy Jiang (Vancouver, B.C. / Southridge School), Tyler Gatewood (Corpus Christi, Tex. / W.B. Ray), Miigwan Tanner-Wostrel (Cloquet, Minn. / Cloquet), and Josh Saha (Rye, N.Y. / Hackley School) finished the event with a collective time of 3:28.54, about 4 seconds later than the first-placed team from San Bernardino Valley.
Jiang would also participate in the men's 200-meter event, placing 13th in a big 36-person field with a time of 23.43 seconds. Jiang ran alongside fellow Beavers Antonio Machado De Oliveira and Bisrat Kassahun (Merritt Island, Fla. / Edgewood Jr/Sr) who placed 29th and 34th in the event.
Senior Miles Jones (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) finished sixth in the men's 3000-meter event for Caltech. Jones collected a time of 8:41.12 seconds and was one of eight Beavers who raced in the 70-person event.
Senior Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / James Madison Memorial) has a strong showing in the men's hammer event, placing second with a 47.50-meter measurement (155 feet 10 inches). That distance broke Amelinez-Robles' previous personal best by almost three meters which he had previously set two weeks prior. He also placed seventh in the men's discus with a measurement of 38.48 meters (126 feet 3 inches) just behind fellow Beaver Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) who placed fifth with a distance of 38.72 meters (127 feet).
The next time the Caltech Track & Field team will be back in action is Saturday, Feb. 22 when they will travel back to Claremont for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Rossi Relays. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m.
