Flaherty Throws Complete-Game Shutout as Caltech Baseball Defeats Whittier

PASADENA, Calif. – Game two of Caltech Baseball's Saturday doubleheader against Whittier College was Brendan Flaherty's to pitch from start to finish. The senior ace tossed his second complete-game shutout of his career en route to the Beavers' first conference win of the season.

Across nine scoreless innings, Flaherty (Narragansett, RI / Lake Forest Academy) threw 145 total pitches and wiggled out of a number of high-pressure situations. In the top of the fifth, Flaherty found himself in a bases-loaded jam with only one out, but induced a shallow flyout and groundout from the top two hitters in the Poets' lineup to escape the inning. The Rhode Island native then induced a pop-up to strand two baserunners in the sixth inning. After allowing a leadoff double in the ninth, Flaherty struck out two of the next three batters to seal the deal for Caltech. The final pitch of the contest was a full-count fastball that caught Whittier pinch hitter Joseph Azevedo looking, for Flaherty's 5th strikeout of the day. In totality, Flaherty scattered seven hits, four walks and one hit batsman across all nine frames.

Supporting Flaherty's effort was a Caltech offense that took competitive at-bats all day long. In the second inning, sophomore Aditya Jain (Santa Clara, Calif / The Harker School) drove in fellow sophomore Quinn Hartman (Huntington Beach, Calif / Marina) on a sacrifice fly. In addition to giving Caltech an early lead, the productive out gave Jain his second run batted in of the season. And in the fifth inning, senior third baseman Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) hit a towering home run over the fence in left-center field to provide the Beavers an insurance run.

Flaherty's last complete-game shutout came in the Beavers' last win against Nobel University. Facing the Knights in March, Flaherty racked up 12 punchouts and only allowed two hits. This year, he leads his team in innings pitched (65.1), strikeouts (52), WHIP (1.61), and batting average against (.288).

Looking to continue their momentum, the Beavers host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Friday, April 17.
