In a practical replica of a game played two weeks ago, La Sierra
University took out Caltech, 72-57, only this time in Pasadena. On
November 17, the Beavers were beaten by the Golden Eagles'
relentless offensive rebounding. Tonight was no different as the
visitors hauled in 22 boards on their own missed shots. Though La
Sierra only won the battle of the boards 44-42, it was able to
translate 27 Caltech turnovers into a 21-8 scoring advantage on its
way to outscoring the Beavers in the paint, 40-18.
A slow-paced first half seemed to be headed Caltech's direction
as La Sierra held a slim lead, 19-13, with 3:40 left in the stanza;
however, the Eagles capitalized on three Beaver turnovers in the
last few minutes and went on a 10-3 burst to take a 13-point lead
into halftime, 29-16. A jumper by Caltech's Mike Edwards at the
5:19 mark was the last field goal his team converted in the first
half, as the Beavers shot 4 of 16 from the field. Caltech held La
Sierra to 34.2 percent field goal shooting, but the Eagles managed
22 more shot attempts.
The tempo quickened in the second stanza as both teams
essentially traded baskets. An Eagle 3-pointer widened the margin
to 18 points, 43-25, with 14:06 remaining. Nonetheless, the Beavers
kept fighting and, over the next 10 minutes, cut the lead in half,
59-50. Nine points is the closest the home team would get as La
Sierra, shooting under 50 percent from the foul line on the year,
made 6 of 9 free throws to seal its second win of the season.
A poor offensive production in the first half was countered with
Caltech's best one of the young year in the second 20 minutes, as
the Beavers scored 41 points, thanks in part to a 16 of 22 (72.7
percent) effort from the free throw line (23 of 34 overall).
Edwards, for the fifth time in as many outings, was the game high
scorer with 21 and a perfect 6 of 6 from the charity stripe. Ryan
Elmquist turned in another double-double with 10 points and 11
rebounds to go along with 4 blocked shots. Ethan Boroson scored a
season high 10 points and added 4 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Pan Wang and Collin Murphy came off the bench to combine for 9
points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Jesse Shevin tossed
in 4 points, grabbed 4 boards, and added a blocked shot.
Caltech is off until Wednesday, December 16 as its students
prepare for and complete final exams.
GO TECH!!!
