Senior Night at Caltech brought hundreds of fans and an
unparalleled atmosphere into Braun Gymnasium on Saturday night in
Pasadena. After a joyous and emotional pre-game ceremony that
highlighted the six graduating Beaver basketball players, 40
minutes of intense hoops action followed with visiting University
of Redlands pulling out an 87-72 win.
Daniel Cullina, Matt Dellatorre, Travis Haussler, Wie Li, Han
Bin Man, and Yang Yang were joined by family members and friends at
center court before tip-off. As a summary of each player's career
was read aloud, a standing ovation rocked the gym. A full size
poster was also given to each of the seniors as he approached
center stage.
The special evening was challenged by the Bulldogs from the
start. The Beavers, looking to avenge a 14-point loss to Redlands
earlier in the season, tied the game at eight on a 3-pointer by
Dellatorre at the 14:45 mark. Redlands, though, proceeded to take
the lead and never relinquished it, pulling ahead by as many as 25
behind sweltering shooting. The visitors hit eight of 13 3-point
shots (61.5 percent) in the first half, five of which came with
6:08 remaining. Despite a season high shooting percentage (59
percent field goals) that included seven trifectas (78 percent from
behind the arc), the Beavers were down 55-35 at intermission.
Dellatorre opened the second stanza with another 3-pointer and
followed that with a traditional 3-point play to cut the visitors'
lead to 16. Caltech later cut the lead to 16 again, as Ryan
Elmquist converted an exciting tip-in at the 9:33 point. Redlands,
however, continued to answer and maintained a solid lead, 77-58,
with 7:56 on the clock.
The Beavers continued to battle as the raucous crowd stood,
chanted, and cheered the entire night in Duke Blue Devil-like
fashion. Eight straight points by Bin Man - thanks to two freebies
and back-to-back 3-point shots - brought Caltech to 13 and forced
an opponent timeout with 6:27 left.
During the next minute, the Beavers trimmed the Bulldogs' lead
to 11 behind two more free throws, but that is as close as the
hosts would get. Three consecutive turnovers allowed Redlands to
build a comfortable 16-point margin and finish the season series.
Dellatorre performed tremendously in his final home game. He
willed his team to compete and poured in 21 points with three
3-pointers. He added four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and
a blocked shot. Bin Man, who nailed three deep balls, finished with
11 points, two assists, and two steals. Li contributed six points
and six assists while Haussler, fighting through the pain of a
recently turned ankle, scored seven points and grabbed nine
rebounds (five offensive). Elmquist ended the evening with another
double-double and game highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Caltech, which hit 10 3-pointers for the second game in a row,
shot 50 percent from the field and 59 percent from beyond the arc.
The home team also recorded a season high 15 assists on its 24
field goals. The Beavers held the Bulldogs to 36 percent shooting
in the second half.
