After its eighth conference game this season, Caltech has yet to
find a "W"; however, the Beavers continue to develop their young
troops and pave the way for success down the road. Though the SCIAC
has not been kind to the fledgling ballers, who to date have
started eight different first-year players - and typically find
four frosh in the introductory lineup - Caltech is making strides
in its ultimate quest to become a competitor.
In tonight's home loss to Cal Lutheran, Caltech's leading
scorers, freshman Mike Edwards (19.2 ppg) and junior Ryan Elmquist
(13.0 ppg), were held to a combined 13 points. Freshman Mason
Freedman decided it was his time to shine and displayed a
spectacular shooting performance, going 7 for 12, for a career-high
16 points. He drained two 3-pointers and also grabbed 3 rebounds in
34 minutes of action as he shattered his previous high of 8 points
against Rivier College.
In Caltech's game at Whittier College this past Saturday,
Freedman scored six points and added four assists while junior
Ziying Wang contributed a career-high seven points. Freshman Jesse
Shevin also turned in a solid showing with four points, five
boards, and two blocks. Caltech won the battle of the boards 35-30,
and accumulated a season-high 14 assists.
Edwards, who is second in the SCIAC in scoring and places near
the top of the conference in free throw percentage
(6th), steals (3rd), 3-point percentage
(13th), 3-pointers made per game (3rd), and
blocked shots (11th), poured in a game-high 23 points.
Elmquist aided the effort with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4
rejections. Through non-league action and the first seven
conference contests, Elmquist was also among the SCIAC's best in
scoring (12th), rebounding (7th), and blocks
(1st).
Serving as hosts to La Verne, Elmquist led the team with 17
points and 8 rebounds while Edwards added 14 points, 3 assists, and
2 steals. Freshman point guard Collin Murphy supplied 8 points, 6
rebounds, 1 block, and 3 steals. Murphy is currently 5th
in the SCIAC in takeaways.
At Pomona-Pitzer, Edwards had a game-high 13 points and Elmquist
notched 12. Freshman Alex Runkel led Caltech with seven rebounds.
The Occidental game was similar, as Edwards scored 15 points while
Elmquist produced 13 points and 8 rebounds. Prior to Oxy, Caltech
hosted SCIAC leading Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Edwards had 13 points
while Runkel scored 12 points and again grabbed 7 rebounds.
Freshman Pan Wang added six points.
Against Redlands, Caltech saw three players reach double figures
as Edwards scored 24 points, Elmquist 13, and Runkel 10. The
Beavers shot 50 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free
throw line. In the opening SCIAC game at Cal Lutheran, Edwards
tallied 18 points and 3 steals. Murphy totaled 10 points, 5
rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal. First-year player Marcus
Lucas led the Beavers with six rebounds.
Caltech leads the SCIAC in opponent 3-point field goal
percentage (.303) and blocked shots (4.2 bpg).
The Beavers travel to the University of Redlands on Saturday for
a 7:30 pm tip.
GO TECH!!!
