Box Score Caltech scored a team season-high in points and freshman Mike
Edwards erupted for 25 in the second half on his way to a
career-high 32, but the Beavers couldn't stop the high-paced
Bulldogs' attack as host Redlands outlasted its visitors, 100-73,
Saturday night.
To open the game, the action went back and forth as each team
managed several short range shot attempts. An Edwards jumper
knotted the score at 7 apiece with 16:25 on the clock before
Redlands went on an 11-2 run. After a layup by junior Ryan
Elmquist, Redlands hung to an 18-11 lead at the 10:50 mark, but the
Bulldogs gradually pulled ahead to finish the half by outscoring
Caltech 32-12 as they went into halftime up 50-23.
In the first 20 minutes, Redlands shot 59.4 percent from the
floor, while Caltech, which attempted a season-high 37 field goals
for one half, only converted 24.3 percent of its shots.
The second stanza was not much different for Redlands as it
continued its torrid tempo. The Bulldogs extended their lead to a
game-high 32 with 11:12 remaining, only in this half the Beavers
were able to keep pace. Caltech converted 18 of 33 field goals
(54.5 percent) over the last 20 minutes and made 5 of 10
3-pointers. Edwards was responsible for three of the second half
trifectas while fellow frosh classmates Mason Freedman and Pan Wang
each nailed one in the period. The squads combined for 100 points
in the second session (50-50).
All 14 players who saw action for Redlands scored (five in
double figures), while seven Caltech cagers entered the scoring
column. Besides Edwards (13 of 27 field goals), Elmquist scored 13
points, while Freedman (six rebounds and four assists) and Wang
(three rebounds and two assists) finished with eight each. Freshman
Collin Murphy solidified the Caltech offense with four points, six
boards, five assists, and four steals. First-year players Marcus
Lucas and Jesse Shevin combined for 8 points and 10 rebounds as the
Beavers out-willed the Bulldogs on the offensive glass 15 to 12.
Caltech continues SCIAC play on Wednesday at league-leading
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while Redlands looks to keep its second
place standing at Pomona-Pitzer. Both games start at 7:30 pm.
