(Win Vacated by NCAA Committee on Infractions)
PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech scored the game's first two goals and held off a late rally in posting the school's first-ever win over Pomona-Pitzer, 2-1, in men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Caltech's North Field.
"This win marks my most memorable moment at Caltech," said ninth-year head coach Rolando Uribe. "We scored two great goals and played solid defense; today was just a total team effort. This afternoon we were the better team."
The Beavers (1-5, 1-4 SCIAC) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Alex Wein scored his first goal of the season. Wein took a feed from Jonathan Yeung and blasted a shot from 18 yards just inside the right post. Caltech took a 2-0 lead just before the midway point of the second half, Mikhail Sushkov found the back of the net from 15 yards out in the 67th minute. Yeung tallied his second assist of the game on the Sushkov goal.
Pomona-Pitzer began its rally with 16:37 left in the contest when Owen Hawkins corralled a pass from Evan Munoz and beat Beaver goalie Marcus Lucas from eight yards out.
In the closing seconds, Hawkins had one last chance from 20 yards out but couldn't get a clean boot on the ball as Lucas tipped the ball aside as the clock expired.
The Sagehens (1-7, 1-4 SCIAC) were their own worst enemy on the afternoon by being called for 12 offside infractions.
Lucas posted four saves in recording his first win of the 2010 season.
