LA VERNE, Calif. -- The Caltech men's water polo team finished
their season at the year ending league tournament hosted by the
University of La Verne.

In the opening round of the 2011 SCIAC men's water polo
tournament, ClaremontMuddScripps posted a 20-4 victory over Caltech
on Friday afternoon.

ClaremontMuddScripps scored on their opening possession when
Maarten Lefor found the back of the net. The Beavers scored on
their opening possession when Daniel
Sexton fired home a five-meter shot. It was the only goal
Caltech scored in the first two periods.
ClaremontMuddScripps scored the final five goals of the opening
frame then proceeded to score seven goals in the second period in
taking a 13-1 edge at the halftime buzzer.
The Stags grew their lead to 15-1 with 5:23 left in the third
period before Sexton scored goals on back-to-back possession midway
through the third period to end the string of 14 unanswered goals
by ClaremontMuddScripps. The Stags scored three more times in the
frame to take a 18-3 lead into the final period.
The top seeded Stags posted a 2-1 scoring edge in the final frame.
Caltech's fourth period goal came from Adam
Khan.

La Verne 19, Caltech

The University of La Verne grabbed momentum late in a high
scoring first period in helping them post a 19-12 win over the
Beavers.

After the Leopards scored the first goal of the game, Caltech
responded with goals by Daniel Sexton and Jack
Blackwood to take a 2-1 edge less than two minutes into the
contest. La Verne responded with three unanswered goals in taking a
4-2 lead with 3:23 left in the frame. The Beavers goal their
deficit back to one goal with an Adam Khan tally on their next
possession. However, La Verne scored four of the final last five
goals in the period to take an 8-4 lead after the first eight
minutes.
La Verne continued their scoring spree with the first three
goals of the second period to push their lead to 11-4. Tommy Kwong
scored Caltech's first goal of the second frame with 5:15 left in
the period but an undaunted Leopards squad pushed their lead to
14-6 at the halftime horn.
Caltech got their deficit down to seven goals on three
occassions in the third period but couldn't pull any closer. The
Leopards took a 16-9 lead into the final period.
Sexton's third goal of the game brought Caltech within 16-10
early in the fourth stanza but the Beavers couldn't pull any closer
down the stretch.
The Beavers scoring drive was led by Sexton's four-goal output
while Kwong and Blackwood each posted hat tricks.
La Verne spread their offense around as 11 different players
found the back of the net.
Sunday, Nov. 13
Occidental 16, Caltech

In their final contest of the season, Caltech couldn't hold an
early lead in dropping a six-goal decision to the Tigers.

Daniel Sexton and Jack Blackwood scored goals on
back-to-back possessions to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead with 5:06
left in the period. Occidental put the final goal of the first
period on the board with 2:51 left in the period.
Occidental took their first lead of the game at 3-2 on a
Samuel Akiyama tally with 4:48 left until the halftime buzzer. The
Beavers offense responded 14 seconds later with a Blackwood goal.
The Tigers offense put three unanswered goals on the board to
finish the period in taking a 6-3 lead after 16 minutes.
The Tigers stretched that lead to 7-3 early in the third period
but goals by Adam Khan and Sexton brought the Caltech deficit down
to 7-5 with just over three minutes left in the stanza. Occidental
scored on their next possession but an undaunted Caltech squad kept
it close with a Blackwood goal to keep their deficit at two goals,
trailing 8-6 with 2:32 remaining. The Tigers stretched their lead
by scoring three of the final four goals in the period in taking an
11-7 edge with eight minutes remaining.
In that final period Caltech got as close as a four-goal deficit
(12-8) with 6:37 left in the contest but couldn't pull any closer
as Occidental pulled out the victory.
Blackwood led all scorers with a game high six goals. Sexton
concluded his Caltech career with a hat trick while Khan rounded
out the Beaver scorers in his final game.
