Beavers Face Tigers Before Spring Break

Caltech and Occidental faced off in a three-game baseball set this weekend. The SCIAC series started on Friday afternoon with a single game in Pasadena before a doubleheader on Saturday in Eagle Rock, Calif.

Game One – Occidental 13, Caltech 2 (Box Score)

After holding the Tigers to just one base runner in the first two innings, the visitors plated two runs in the top of the third inning on a Riley Smith home run. Caltech responded with a run of their own when an Albie Lavin sacrifice fly scored Blaine Matulevich.

Occidental busted open the tight contest with a four-run fourth inning then backed that up with a six-run fifth inning to pad their lead. Occidental added a run in the sixth before Caltech scored their final run in the seventh inning.

Brian Penserini, Lavin and Matulevich each had two hits for the Beavers. Yantek scored both Beaver runs off the bats of Lavin and Penserini respectively.

In addition to Smith's home run, Logan Allen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's for Occidental

Game Two – Occidental 18, Caltech 5 (Box Score)

After a scoreless first inning, Occidental put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the second, third, fourth innings.

The home squad scored five in second inning, seven in the third inning then six in the fourth inning to secure the win. The Beavers put a single run on the board in sixth innings then put together a four run seventh inning.

Mason Freedman had his best game of the season going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Albie Lavin also had a two-hit day while scoring a run and driving in two more. Brian Penserini went 2-for-4 with two RBI's

Pedro Aldape tallied four RBI's during his 2-for-4 effort to help lead the Tigers. Logan Allen scored three runs and recorded two RBI's.

Game Three - Occidental 8, Caltech 5 (Box Score)

Occidental jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning but a valient Caltech squad kept the Tigers at bay before knocking the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Brian Penserini singled home Eric Schropp and and Mason Freedman to tie score.

The Tigers responded with a three-run fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Occidental pushed their cushions to further with two more runs in the seventh inning. The Beavers continued to fight as they pushed across three runs in the eighth inning. Albie Lavin started the rally with a base loaded single that scored Ryan Casey. After an Eric Schropp ground out scored Scott Yantek, Perserini drove home the final run of the inning to get the Caltech deficit down to 7-5.

The home squad put a single run on the board in their half of the eighth inning. Occidental's relief core allowed just one base runner in the ninth inning to put any hopes of a Caltech comeback away.

Penserini went 2-for-4 with three RBI's to continue his season's strong hitting performance. Freedman finished his solid afternoon with two runs scored.

Lavin had a solid outing on the mound, going 7.0 innings and striking out five.
