CLAREMONT, CA – The La Verne baseball squad knocked off Caltech in a Saturday doubleheader to complete a three-game weekend SCIAC series set.

The doubleheader was played at ClaremontMuddScripps because of on-going construction on the La Verne campus.

Game One – La Verne 5, Caltech 3 (Box Score)

The Leopards plated single runs in the second, third and fifth innings in building a 3-0 lead before Caltech made things very interesting during the game's final innings.

The Beavers plated a pair of runs in the sixth. Daniel Chou worked a walk to start the inning then stole second base to get into scoring position. Blaine Matulevich had a product out as his ground ball two batters later scored Chou. Albie Lavin then reached out an error then was driven home on Brian Penserini's third triple of the year.

However, La Verne got a run back in their half of the sixth inning on an Adrian Franco RBI single. They plated another run in the eighth when Michael Reyes scored to make the score 5-2 entering the ninth.

Penserini led off the inning with a single and score two batter later when Jerome Skelly hit a one-out double. However, the Beavers rally fell short as Skelly was picked-off and Derek Kearney struck out to end the threat.

Caltech's offense was led at the plate Penserini's second straight two-hit game. Matulevich, Skelly, Kearny and Thomas Kwok each had a hit.

Daniel Chou pitched his second complete game of the season. The first-year went eight innings and struck out two.

Game Two – La Verne 6, Caltech 0 (Box Score)

A solid outing on the mound by Phil Schick combined with a steady offense was enough for the Leopards in the nightcap.

Schick went 8.0 innings and struck out 12 while giving up six hits to earn the win.

La Verne scored four runs in the third inning and then plated a pair in the fifth inning to aid in Schick's solid effort on the mound.

Thomas Kwok went 2-for-3 at the plate in producing his first multi-hit game of his collegiate career.
