#16 Pomona-Pitzer Late Scoring Innings Lead to Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLAREMONT, CA – The 16th ranked Pomona-Pitzer baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The series represented the sixth straight game Caltech has played a nationally ranked team after playing Cal Lutheran in a three-game series last weekend.

Game One – Pomona-Pitzer 12, Caltech 2 (Box Score)

Daniel Chou kept the Sagehen off balance during the early innings. The home team was able to build a 4-0 lead by piecing together enough runs.  A pair of first inning hits led to a run then two more hits in the third inning plated another Sagehen run.

The home team grew their lead to 4-0 in fourth inning. E.J. Lopez and Kevin Brice each scored as Pomona-Pitzer slowly nudged ahead. However, Caltech responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Beavers first run came when Derek Kearney scored on a Sagehen fielding error. Caltech cut their deficit in half when Thomas Kwok scored on an Albie Lavin sacrifice fly.

Pomona-Pitzer put the game away with an eight run, eight hit seventh inning. During the inning the Sagehens sent 12 men to the plate and sealed the win when Nick Gentili singled home Ryan Madden.

Chou threw his fourth complete game of the season which leads all SCIAC pitchers. At the plate Caltech was paced by Kearney's 2-for-3 effort.

Gentili and Mike Moyer each had three hits for the Sagehens.

Game Two – Pomona-Pitzer 14, Caltech 4 (Box Score)

Caltech started well as they scored the first run of the game when Blaine Matulevich crossed the plate on a Brian Penserini ground out in the first inning. Pomona-Pitzer responded in their half of the frame with a four-run, five-hit inning highlighted by an Erik Munzer two RBI single.

The home team took that three-run advantage and slowly grew their lead. Pomona-Pitzer scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings in taking an 8-1 lead. Caltech two run in the seventh inning when a Thomas Kwok single drove home Mason Freedman and Jerome Skelly to trim their deficit to 8-3.

Pomona-Pitzer got those two runs back in the seventh inning when Kevin Brice doubled home E.J. Lopez and Nick Gentili. The Beavers put together three hits in the eighth inning as they got a run across the plate when Mason Freedman drew a based loaded walk that scored Penserini.

A four-run bottom of the eighth inning sealed the win for the Sagehens as they strung together three hits to close the game early.

Skelly continued to swing a solid bat of late as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored. The sophomore had seven hits in the three-game set.

Munzer's three hits, four RBI's and three runs scored paced the home squad's effort at the plate.
