Occidental Gets Win Behind DeRaad's Effort; Place Gets Collegiate First

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Two big scoring innings proved to be critical in Occidental's 11-1 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.

The home team scored the game's first run in the second inning on a Jonathan Wong sacrifice fly that scored Devon DeRaad. Caltech responded the next time at the plate when Oliver Curtiss, who started the inning with walk, scored three batters later on a Daniel Chou ground out.

With the score knotted a 1-1 at the start of the bottom third inning, the Tigers grabbed control of the game. Occidental put a six-spot on the board highlighted by a DeRaad grand slam over the rightfield wall. After holding the Beavers scoreless in the fourth inning, Occidental plated three more runs to go in front 10-1.

The Occidental pitchers held Caltech to one hit the remainder of the game. Occidental clinched the game when DeRaad hit his second home run of the day in the seventh inning. The first-year ended the game with eight RBI's.

On the mound Alec Strain pitched 5.0 innings, struck out four and gave-up three hits to earn the win.

Of note for the Beavers was Alex Place's 2-for-3 effort at the plate. It is the first-years first two-hit game of his collegiate career.

Caltech travels to Cal Lutheran from their final road game of the season on Sunday afternoon.
