Rookies Levine, Watson Piece Together Hits at Redlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

REDLANDS, Calif. (Apr. 4, 2015) – Freshmen Garrett Levine (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Acad.) and David Watson (Fort Collins, Colo. / Windsor) each recorded hits in both games of a doubleheader between the Caltech baseball team and the University of Redlands on Saturday.

Levine extended his on-base streak to a team-season-high 11 straight games.

Redlands took both games to improve to 20-9 overall and 13-8 in the SCIAC while Caltech drops to 2-25 (0-18).

Game 1: Caltech 0, Redlands 10 (7 inn.)

The Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the first inning thanks to an error, tacked on three more in the third and another in each of the fourth and fifth innings.  The Beavers, meanwhile, mustered only a single in four of the first five innings before Levine smacked a double with two outs.  Caltech could not bring him home, though, and Redlands scored the necessary three runs in the seventh to end the game.

Game 2: Caltech 0, Redlands 10 (7)

After senior Derek Kearney (Carlsbad, Calif. / La Costa Canyon) and the Redlands pitcher spun a clean frame apiece to open the nightcap, Levine led off the second inning with a single, but a fielder's choice and double play ended the Beavers' hopes of scoring.

Redlands exploded for eight runs in the second inning to take control of the game and added two more in the fifth to go ahead, 10-0.  Caltech's bats were silenced over the next five innings until Watson and Levine attempted one last rally, singling and walking their way aboard with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a fly out to centerfield ended the game.

Although Kearney was saddled with the loss, he did not allow a single earned run over the six-inning complete game.

Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will take on Whittier College (5-24, 3-15) in their penultimate SCIAC series of the regular season, beginning at the Poets' diamond on Friday, Apr. 10.
