Box Score PASADENA (Feb. 12, 2020) – The Caltech baseball team opened the 2020 regular season with the annual Orange Out game against cross-town foe Providence Christian College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Beavers threatened the Sea Beggars early, going hit-for-hit with the visitors while holding them off the scoreboard thanks to a solid first two innings from sophomore pitcher Dawson Beutler (Omaha, Neb. / Millard West). Beutler held the Sea Beggars in check with a scoreless first frame, then struck out the side in the second inning with back-to-back-to-back punchouts looking. In addition to the sophomore's strong work on the mound, Caltech also received scoreless innings from freshmen Steven Yee (Leawood, Kan. / Blue Valley) and Will Dembski (Pella, Iowa / Pella Christian), who pitched out the game's final frame.
Dembski, meanwhile provided some excitement with his bat in the fifth inning when he took drove the ball just a few feet short of the right-field wall to secure the Beavers' first extra-base hit of the year, a triple. The hard-hitting freshman, who drew the start at the hot corner, also provided Caltech's only RBI of the game when he batted in sophomore second baseman Ryan Ruscansky (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) in the just the second at-bat of his career.
Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers will waste no time in mixing it up against SCIAC competition when they travel to California Lutheran University on Valentine's Day to begin a three-game weekend series. The Kingsmen have already received Top-25 votes and will come to Pasadena on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
