Box Score ORANGE, Calif. (Mar. 8, 2020) – The Caltech baseball team contended with defending national champion Chapman University in non-conference fare on Sunday afternoon, scoring a pair of runs against the Panthers.
Caltech plated both runs in the sixth inning. Senior shortstop Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School) got things started for Caltech with a lead-off double down the left-field line, and was promptly batted in with another double from junior first baseman Mitchell Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor). Classmate Dillon Holder (New York, NY / Horace Mann) kept things going for the Beavers with a base hit into right field, and freshman Jack Warren (Foster City, Calif. / San Mateo) capped a run of four consecutive Caltech hits with a single into right field that brought Watson home. Perry and Holder, along with senior Alex Wuschner (Farmington, Conn. / Farmington) led the Beavers' at the dish, combining for six of the team's 10 hits.
Four pitchers saw action for the visiting Beavers, with freshman Steven Yee (Leawood, Kan. / Blue Valley) drawing the start. Senior Grant Messner (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest), and sophomores Pierce Governale (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School) and Ryan Ruscansky (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) also spent time on the mound, with the quartet combining for three punchouts.
Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers are scheduled to face off with Illinois Institute of Technology for a three-game weekend series beginning on Saturday, Mar. 14 at 11 a.m.
