CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 26, 2022) – The Caltech baseball team faced the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens over the weekend, their first SCIAC match up since the Beavers swept a doubleheader against Whittier on March 5th. Unfortunately, the Beavers did not prevail in this match up and fell to the Sagehens 3-15 in game one, 2-13 in game two, and 3-13 in game three.
On Friday afternoon, the Beavers hosted the Sagehens on North Field to open the three-game series. Leading the game offensively was designated hitter Thorsen Kristufek (McKinney, Texas / McKinney). The freshman scored two RBIs with one single and a homerun belted over the center field fence. Kristufek's hitting performance scored two out of three runs for the Beavers in the afternoon. In the same inning, junior Will Dembski (Pella, Iowa / Pella Christian) hit a double into right-center field and brought sophomore Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) to the plate where he notched an RBI single. Defensively, the Beavers were led by Pierce Governale (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School) who pitched in the third and fourth innings. During his outing, the senior allowed no runs across the plate, striking out one batter and walking zero. After Governale, junior Arya Mevada (Marietta, Ga. / Wheeler) took the mound in the fifth and sixth innings and only allowed one run to cross the plate. Despite the Beavers' pitching performance later in the game, multiple runs were allowed early on and caused the Beavers to fall 3-15 after seven innings.
The Beavers traveled to Claremont for games two and three of the series. Dembski led the Beavers offensively with one single and a two-run homerun over left-center field. The junior is now batting .405 with eight homeruns for the season. Freshman Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) and freshman Cameron McNamee (Great Fall, Mont. / Great Falls) both notched two hits in the game, while Jenkins and junior Jack Warren (Foster City, Calif. / San Mateo) had one hit each. Defensively, sophomore Kyle Reese (Sammamish, Wash. / Skyline) proved effective on the mound in the fourth and fifth innings by allowing one hit with no runs and striking out two batters. Following Reese, Mevada took the mound in the sixth inning where the junior only allowed one hit and one run in his outing. Despite their improvement both offensively and defensively, the Beavers would fall 2-12 after seven innings due to the Sagehens' aggressive hitting early in the game.
The Beavers closed out the series in game three, totaling five hits, three runs and two RBIs. Early in the game, Dembski sought to increase his team's momentum by stealing second after he reached on a walk. In the same inning, Jenkins continued his hitting streak with a single to left field. This advanced Dembski to third base where he would steal home to give the Beavers their first run of the game. Later in the fifth inning, Warren improved his hitting from the first two games by blasting a two-run homerun. Following the junior, senior Dawson Beutler (Omaha, Neb. / Millard West) drove a double into left field. In the sixth inning, sophomore Darren Rhodes (Waco, Texas / Midway) singled to right field but was unfortunately left on base due to the Sagehens dominant pitching. Overall, the Beavers were capped to seven innings as they fell 3-13 to the Sagehens.
Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Caltech baseball team are back in action at 3 pm on Friday, April 1, when they travel to La Verne and open a three-game series against the Leos.
