Box Score 3 REDLANDS, Calif. (April 24, 2022) - Caltech Baseball wrapped up their three-game SCIAC series against the fifth-place University of Redlands Bulldogs on a perfect afternoon for baseball on Sunday. The rare Sunday games were the result on Redlands hosting its commencement ceremonies on Saturday.
While the Bulldogs demonstrated the pitching and offensive prowess that has them fighting for a top spot in the conference standings and a spot in the post-season tournament, the Beavers battled and continued to compete as the baseball schedule enters its final stretch for the 2022 season.
Starting on North Field on the Caltech campus on Friday afternoon, a constant and cold wind blew throughout the game as junior Steven Yee (Leawood, Kan. / Blue Valley) was given the ball in hopes of replicating his prior week performance vs. CMS. Unfortunately, that's not how the outing went, as Yee and the Beavers faced several hurdles that they weren't able to overcome in the 16-3 loss. The Beavers were led on the afternoon by an outstanding relief effort turned in by senior right-hander Pierce Governale (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School). In 3.1 innings of work, he limited the Bulldogs to one hit, while striking out three and walking no one. Offensively, the Beavers were paced by senior Dawson Beutler (Omaha, Neb. / Millard West) and sophomore Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) who each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. The other Beaver's run was knocked in by freshman Garrett Knuf (Laguna Niguel, Calif. / Dana Hills).
In Sunday's game one of the doubleheader, Head Coach Kevin Whitehead handed the ball to Beutler in the hopes that he could tame the Bulldogs' bats. For the first four innings, Beutler and the Beavers kept the game close, and when senior catcher William Cook (El Segundo, Calif. / Windward School) grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Knuf in the top of the fifth, the Beavers were within three runs, trailing 4-1 after four and a half. Caltech would get no closer as the Bulldog bats, and shutdown pitching, closed things out in favor of the home team, 11-1.
Game 3 of the series and the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader started off positively for the Beavers. After a lead-off base hit by junior Will Dembski (Pella, Iowa / Pella Christian) to start the game, and a walk two batters later to Beutler, junior Jack Warren (Foster City, Calif. / San Mateo) connected on a triple down the right field line, scoring two. A sacrifice fly on the ensuing Jenkins at bat plated Warren, making the score 3-0 Beavers after just five batters. That's where the offensive output ended on the afternoon for Caltech who also hit into double plays in the fifth and seventh innings. Buoyed by the three runs of support, senior right-hander Ryan Ruscansky (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) took the mound sporting a Caltech best 4-7 record. While he sailed through the first, Redlands got level with the Beavers in the bottom of the second, and never looked back in winning 13-3. Five costly errors contributed to coming up on the short end of this contest, while the Beavers were charged with eleven errors in the Series.
Up next for the Beavers is the final week of the 2022 baseball season. After opening the series against the Tigers of Occidental College in Eagle Rock on Friday, April 29 at 3:00 pm, the two teams will wrap up their seasons and SCIAC play with a doubleheader on the Caltech campus on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 11:00 am. This will also represent the Beavers' opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of six seniors who will be playing their final games in a Beavers' uniform.
