Box Score 3 ORANGE, Calif. (Apr. 9, 2022) – Caltech Baseball wrapped up their three-game series with SCIAC rival Chapman University in a Saturday doubleheader at Hart Park.
Junior Will Dembski (Pella, Iowa / Pella Christian) led off Friday's home game with a single to right field, and classmate Jack Warren (Foster City, Calif. / San Mateo) did the same in the bottom of the second inning before stealing second base. The Beavers finally got on the board in the sixth inning after freshman Thorsen Kristufek (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) was hit by a pitch, and Dembsky drove him home with an RBI double deep into centerfield. Caltech would notch one more hit off the bat of sophomore Gautam Chawla (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton), who knocked a single into right center in his first at-bat of the season.
The Beavers scored first in Saturday's early game as Dembski drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second when freshman Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) was hit by a pitch. Warren, batting in the cleanup spot, threaded the needle with a single through the left side of the infield for an RBI, scoring Dembski. Kristufek led off with a deep drive to right field, sliding in just behind the throw to third base but earning a double for his effort. Freshman Edward Speer (Austin, Texas / Leander) later connected for a two-out single to right center and his first hit of a flawless game in the batter's box.
Senior Dawson Beutler (Omaha, Neb. / Millard West) lifted a one-out single to left center in the third, and the Beavers scored again in the fourth as senior Ryan Ruscansky (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) was hit by a pitched and advanced to third base on two wild pitches before Speer squeezed him home on an infield hit toward the mound. Speer completed his three-for-three game with another infield hit in the sixth. Freshman righty Ryan Wong (Chicago, Ill. / Lane Tech College Prep) pitched the final two innings in relief and struck out four Panthers without allowing a hit and only one earned run.
Ruscansky started on the hill for game two of the doubleheader, throwing eight innings for a complete game and allowing just one walk and four earned runs. In the fifth, freshman Garrett Knuf (Laguna Niguel, Calif. / Dana Hills) reached base on a fielder's choice, and then Dembsky came aboard after getting beaned by the Chapman pitcher. Fishel then drove them both home on a two-RBI hit to left center. Senior Spiro Stameson (Newport Beach, Calif. / Newport Harbor) cracked a single into right field in the sixth, and the hits kept coming with Knuf, Fishel, and Beutler all earning hits in the seventh. Sophomore Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) and Ruscansky each singled in the eighth to give the Beavers a total of nine base hits in the contest.
Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers face the Pioneers of Lewis & Clark College on Sunday at 11 a.m. It will be the teams' fifth meeting of the 2022 season.
