Box Score ORANGE, Calif. – Caltech's women's water polo team took on a strong opponent in Chapman University Wednesday night, holding the No. 3 team in Division III water polo close for much of the game.
"We did a great job of handling the high physicality and pressure from Chapman," Head Coach
Jon Bonafede said. "We kept it close in the first half and did not roll over when they tried to flex on us."
The Beavers struck first on a powerplay goal by senior
Riya Shrivastava (Saratoga, Calif. / Lynbrook). Chapman surged ahead with a four-goal run, but then Caltech responded with four of the next five to even the score.
Four different players found the net on that comeback, beginning with senior
Emma Gurcan (Istanbul, Turkey / Lincoln HS; Portland, Ore.) followed shortly by first-year
Emma Titus (Hood River, Ore. / Hood River Valley) just 25 seconds later.
The Beavers then capitalized on a couple Panther exclusions with sophomore
Mia Mutadich (London, U.K. / Notting Hill and Earling) and then sophomore
Madelyn Gilbert (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East) each beating the goalkeeper.
Senior
Tyler Fox (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) wrapped up Caltech's first-half scoring with a game-tying goal in the last minute, Caltech yet again making Chapman pay for an exclusion foul.
Gurcan led the Beavers in points on offense with two goals and three assists, along with two steals and four drawn exclusions against the home side. Mutadich netted her second consecutive hat trick with three goals, also drawing one exclusion and swiping one steal. Sophomore
Maya Dickson (Atlanta, GA / North Atlanta) picked up three steals and three drawn exclusions to help create more Caltech scoring chances.
The Beavers will return to their home pool on Saturday, March 30 for a duel with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Find live stats and video at
