PASADENA , Calif. – Caltech Baseball overcame an early deficit, defeating Bethesda University of California at home, 8-7, Tuesday, April 29 for the Beavers' second win this week.
The win follows an 8-6 victory over No. 11 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Sunday, April 27.
Junior Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, RI / Lake Forest Academy) earned his first career save against Bethesda, recording the final four outs. With the Beavers up by a single run and runners on the corners with two out in the top of the 8th, he was asked to keep the game-tying run on third base. He induced a critical strikeout and handled the ninth to preserve the 8-7 victory.
After an early deficit, Caltech responded with a three-run bottom of the third inning to tie the game, 3-3. Junior Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) swatted a single up the middle for two of his eventual three RBIs on the day. Hu scored the tying run in the third inning when Flaherty hit a sacrifice fly.
First-year Quinn Hartman (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) also hit for three RBIs on Tuesday. His first came on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to drive in the go-ahead run. His sixth-inning RBI double kickstarted a rally that saw the Beavers claim the lead for the second time. Hu and sophomore Jack Bernhardt (Littleton, Colo. / Columbine) each hit sacrifice pop-outs in the inning and Caltech led, 7-4, after six innings. Hartman also drove in sophomore Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School) in the seventh inning, giving Caltech an 8-6 lead that it would not relinquish.
Junior RHP Jacob Alderete (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta Mesa) earned the win on the mound for the Beavers, bringing his record to 2-2 on the season.
Caltech baseball travels to Orange, Calif. For a game against Chapman University, Fri. May 2 at 3pm.
