Caltech Men's Basketball battled through the 2024-25 season, building chemistry as the team's young talent transitioned into veteran leadership.
The Beavers' scoring leader, junior Noah Hicks (Oxford, Ga. / George Walton Academy), was supported this season by newcomers like first-year Stuart Florescu (Toronto, Canada / Crescent School) and sophomore Andrew Koclanes (Denver Colo. / Colorado Academy). After high roster turnover two seasons ago, these student-athletes have given Caltech Men's Basketball a core identity moving into 2025-26.
Individually, Hicks had a remarkable season for the Beavers, leading the team in points (353), assists (36) and three-point-percentage (.287). 2024-25 was his second consecutive year leading the squad in points and assists, as he had 447 and 54, respectively, as a sophomore. He additionally joined the elite Caltech 1000 Points Club in the team's road game against Whittier College.
Alongside Hicks, Florescu comprised the other half of Caltech's two-headed monster, leading the squad with a .445 field-goal-percentage. The 6' 8" center recycled the Caltech offense with his team-leading 40 offensive rebounds. Florescu was a presence to be reckoned with on the defensive end of the floor as well, swatting 13 blocks, leading all Beavers in that category.
Another newcomer, first-year Chase Williamson (McDonough, Ga. / Union Grove), showed promise in 2024-25. Williamson averaged 11.3 points on a nightly basis, the second-highest on the team (Florescu averaged 11.2 points per game). His development in coming years should only prove beneficial to Caltech's offense.
Koclanes found a role as a high-energy momentum swinger off the bench in 2024-25, sinking the second-most three pointers of any Beaver, including starters. His effectiveness in that role gives the squad in-game options at critical moments. Importantly, Koclanes' weaponization of the three-point line allowed the team the ability to seize control of games without demanding impossible minutes from other scorers.
Off the court, the Beavers gained national recognition, as Senior James Downs (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach), Hicks and Koclanes were all named to the Academic All-District team by College Sports Communicators.
With so many central players gaining experience together, the future – and near future at that – looks promising for the Beavers
