Beutler Triples Three Times on Arizona Spring Break Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. (Mar. 3, 2019) – The Caltech baseball team put up a combined 10 runs over three games during its weekend road trip to Arizona where it played two games against Carthage College and one in between the two against Gustavus Adolphus College.

Carthage 6, Caltech 2

The Beavers held their own with Carthage in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Freshman Ryan Ruscansky (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) held the mound for Caltech and spun seven innings while striking out three batters. He pitched well enough, particularly early on to give his team a chance to take the lead in fifth inning which the Beavers capitalized on. Sophomore designated hitter Ari Rosner (Edgewater, Md. / Georgetown Day) started the inning with a single through the left side before freshman left fielder Dawson Beutler (Omaha, Neb. / Millard West) advanced him to third with a single of his own. Freshman Max Popken (Westport, Conn. / Staples) picked up the first RBI with a single down the left field line, and senior Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) brought Beutler home from third with a sacrifice fly into right field.

Three different players came out of the first of Saturday's two games with a pair of hits, including Rosner, senior catcher Mark Burleson (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Tesoro) and junior shortstop Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School). Junior Grant Messner (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) pitched out Caltech's final inning when Ruscansky came out in the eighth inning and made it through without allowing any earned runs.

Gust. Adolphus 18, Caltech 3

Caltech added another three runs against Gustavus Adolphus, two of which came in the third inning. A Beutler triple brought classmate William Cook (El Segundo, Calif. / Windward School) home from first before a Popken sacrifice fly ultimately brought Beutler home. Beutler added another RBI in the fifth inning when he knocked in another triple to score Rosner from first. The freshman is the team leader in RBI's hitting out of the leadoff spot this year and his four triples currently lead the SCIAC. Senior lefty Jonah Krop (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) got the start for Caltech.

Carthage 15, Caltech 5

Beutler racked up three more RBI's and two hits against Carthage on Sunday. His final RBI came on yet another triple in the sixth inning, this time up the middle to bring home Cook and classmate Ruscansky, who got the start at second base. Sophomore Dillon Holder followed up with a big hit of his own to bring Beutler home from third. Perry plated Caltech's other run in the fourth inning when a sacrifice fly into deep center field scored Cook from third.

Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers will return to North Field for their next game, which is set for this Saturday, Mar. 9, against Whitman College.
