Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2021) - Caltech women's soccer demonstrated improvement in several areas the team has been emphasizing over the past several weeks in a tight battle with the University of La Verne Leopards on Wednesday afternoon.
Head Coach Ellery Gould and her staff have focused intently on the importance of possession, increasing the number of shots on goal and players moving off of each other, with the results on full display in the close 2-0 defeat. Having already met earlier in the season in a nonconference game on Sept. 11, in which senior
Schuyler Dick (Hudson, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) scored a dramatic 90th-minute goal off a restart to give the Beavers a
1-0 victory, this match provided a significant opportunity for the Beavers to get their first conference win of the 2021 campaign.
The Beavers controlled much of the run of play early in the first half through multiple possessions in which Caltech strung together five passes or more on two occasions in the first 45 minutes. However, while the Beavers maintained a good amount of control, they were unable to break through the Leopards' last line of defense and come up with meaningful chances, only putting two shots on goal in the first half.
The clean and free-flowing match saw several Beavers stand out beyond what appeared on the stat sheet. This group included sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall), who played in the second half and made several nice saves. She spelled junior
Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Academy), who faced an early assault by the Leopards in conceding two well-taken counterattack shots that resulted in goals. These finishing strikes came within three minutes of each other just under 15 minutes into the match. After the flurry of activity, Fine and the Beavers defense kept the Leopards in check for the balance of the match, with Fine making several quality saves that kept the Beavers close at intermission, when she gave way to Robertson. Freshman defender
Georgia Malueg (Miami, Fla. / Palmer Trinity School) shined in providing shut down coverage from her left back position as well as some threatening dribbles forward and sophomore
Kathryn Thompson (Roseville, Calif. / Granite Bay) provided the most dangerous scoring chances for the Beavers, most notably in the second half when Caltech put four shots on net in an effort to get on the scoreboard.
Gould and the Beavers continue SCIAC play this coming Saturday, Oct. 16 at 11:00 a.m. when they travel to take on the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands.
