Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 23, 2021) – Junior Josh Finnerty (Walled Lake, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) scored a late but well-deserved consolation goal as Caltech men's soccer made regionally ranked University of Redlands work for every bit of a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Finnerty rose to meet the ball off a restart from the boot of senior Samir Johnson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) with a strong header to get Caltech on the board against one of its strongest opponents of the season in the 85th minute.
Prior to that, sophomore Derek Ing (Hong Kong / Hong Kong International) and the back line, led by senior Andrew Larson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit), had kept Redlands off the board through 55 minutes other than a header via free kick of the visitors' own in the 18th minute. A back-breaking penalty in the 57th on a reversed foul call that had originally gone Caltech's way might have affected the hosts to the point of letting up the next two goals in the 66th and 74th minutes, but to any observer the match was played far closer than the final score indicated and the Beavers were rewarded in part with the late strike to end on a positive note.
Senior Rohan Mirchandani (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill) posed a strong threat coming in from the wing as usual, while rookie Allen Yang (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte) continued to assert himself as a legitimate force to gameplan around in the defensive midfield.
Head Coach Duncan Gillis and the Beavers will enjoy a full week to recover before concluding their season at an underrated Occidental College that has faced the West region's toughest schedule on Saturday, Oct. 30.
