Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Sep. 11, 2021) – Senior Schuyler Dick (Hudson, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) rose to the occasion yet again in the most historic moment of Caltech women's soccer's four-year existence with a game-winning goal in the waning seconds against the University of La Verne on Saturday morning.
With 14 seconds remaining, Dick coolly floated a shot after a brief restart touch by rookie Sophia Elam (Medford, Ore. / North Medford) from 30 yards out just beyond the reach of ULV's goalkeeper to seal the victory. The senior has scored in all three games so far in this season, including a pair of game-winners as her success from set pieces is proving to be a potent weapon for Caltech.
The Leopards' constant pressure on offense pushed the Beavers defense to their limits, but the center back pairing of junior Catherine Kauber (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) and sophomore Cameron Scantlin (San Diego, Calif. / Valhalla) remained stout to open the door for the Beavers to capitalize on a critical foul with mere seconds to go in regulation. Kauber in particular stood out with an exceptional performance, constantly breaking up attacks and maintaining possession through the back line as well as making a crucial defensive save in front of an open goal late in the first half.
The goalkeeper duo of junior Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) and sophomore Megan Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) combined to make 12 saves in the shutout, with Fine making a pair of point-blank near-post saves in the first half and Robertson a a back-to-back flurry after a La Verne striker fired a rebound back toward the net in the second half. Senior Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) had a point-blank opportunity on the offensive end midway through the first half but could not get the shot off cleanly, while freshman Georgia Malueg (Miami, Fla. / Lamer Trinity School) kept the left wing locked down in defense.
