Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Sept. 8, 2021) – The Caltech men's soccer backline highlighted today's match as Caltech men's soccer showed huge improvement in their second match together, constantly frustrating the San Diego Christian College offense and limiting the Hawks attackers to long range shots over nearly 70 scoreless minutes.
With both teams heavily utilizing transition play to create scoring chances, Senior Andrew Larson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) calmly broke up a dangerous Hawks counterattack early in the first half and remained a commanding presence on defense all day. Classmate JD Walker (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) also helped stifle the San Diego attack, showing strong leadership in the backfield once again and taking pressure off of Caltech's goalkeepers
Freshman Allen Yang (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte) stood out in the midfield as protection for the back line and the initial man to transition counterattacks. The Beavers generally showed improvement holding the ball and seeking out incisive passes moving forward, though when they did concede in the 68th minute fatigue appeared to be playing a factor in the intense heat.
Head Coach Duncan Gillis and the Beavers will have a full week to continue sharpening their technical skills and boost their conditioning with Saturday's match having been canceled due to Life Pacific ending their season early. Caltech next will open SCIAC play on Wednesday, September 15 at California Lutheran University.
